The club ran our third annual Newbie Competition this week. The competition is open to all members that joined (or rejoined) in the 2023/24 season, with 32 participants, and takes place within a single afternoon.
The competion is played over three rounds of seven ends, but differs to regular games in two respects:
- Rinks and positions are randomly drawn, so a player doesn’t know who they might be playing with or in which position beforehand. Therefore everyone will play in a range of positions and with differing team mates in each round
- Only positive points are scored, so if a team picks up a three on one end each player on that team writes a “3” on their scorecard. If they drop a three then they write “0”. If they drop a six… they also write “0”
The winner at the end of the day is the player with the highest point total, and if points are tied then it comes down to whichever player has won the most ends.
This years winner was Kevin, pictured below accepting the trophy from Bob, who just beat re-joiner (and anything-but-newbie) Martin. They tied on points but Kevin’s teams had won more ends.
Next week sees the “Class of 21-23 Competition”, which takes the same format but is open to anyone that joind during the 2021/22 or 2022/23 seasons.
